Pat Hanly’s table is a key image in John Fields’ Signature series which is at Gus Fisher Gallery, Auckland 2 June -11 July 2015. John Fields wrote “One of my best and more subtle interpretations on the theme. This was really getting to the kernel”.
Leading painter Pat Hanly, was a university colleague of John’s. While Hanly taught draughtsmanship at the School of Architecture Fields was photographer at Cell Biology and then the Anatomy Department. They also knew each other socially. Both were among a coterie of artists and boaties who frequented the Hotel Kiwi close to uni. John wasn’t strictly a boatie but was a keen sailor who had served in the US Navy in the Pacific.
