Blair was an architect, working on the design of the University of Auckland. In which capacity he may have first met Fields when John became aware of deficiencies in the light proofing of the darkroom being built for Cell Biology. John insisted that the darkroom be entirely lightproof.
In the end the department ended up with a state of the art darkroom with enlarger and other equipment chosen by John. It was in this darkroom that John processed the many films and prints he made during evenings and weekends.
Blair and his partner Judy lived for many years at this house in John Street, Ponsonby; the site of many parties photographed by Fields.
