At this time Don Gifford lived at Charlotte St, later demolished. He used the neighbouring section to build his ferro-cement yacht.
Don, a landscaper, was a good mate of John’s and they drank together at the Hotel Kiwi. They shared a love of sailing and Don was very supportive of John’s photography especially his work in and around Auckland and his Thames series (1973-75).
John accompanied Don from time to time on trips in his beloved Landrover and there are a number of photographs from those times.
